Slade BA Degree Show

Having executed a big wall painting of a face previously in the year, I decided to carry on that thread with this angrier version.

March

woburn installation shot

At the Woburn research centre space I worked on a proposal to execute some large scale drawings. Various permanent markers and graphite pencils. I require assistance to complete the five drawings on time. The green drawing 'Oscar' spanned 3metres x 3metres, while the black drawing 'Hector' spanned 1.75metres x 2.5metres.

Using felt-tip pen, I drew from the middle outwards. The simple method formed layered circles, varying in shade, quality and depth of colour. The circle measured 1.5metres x 1.5metres.

Linford

As a child, the British athlete Linford Christie was a hero of mine. When he prepared himself in the starting blocks he repeatedly visualised himself winning the race. This thought process fascinated me. This fascination became a starting point. Using birchface plywood I cut out a formal line drawing of his face. One in which you could look through, very thin, while having presence in a space. The face measure 1.25metres by 2 metres.

Flagellant

Using approximately 80 brass hinges, I bolted them together in a random pattern. The process was tedious, forming bacteria like structure. Artist Matthew Derbyshire described it as “fucking ugly”. This made me quite proud. I found the resulting object eerily problematic. Not wanting to leave this as just another art object I decided to keep it activate by projecting through it. Now it became an integral part of a large setup. The object itself is fairly disturbing reminiscent of an implement of torture.

From a scavenged hardwood desk, I made a small wooden structure which resembled a miniature monolith. I then painted this in green gloss paint.

December

In December at the Slade, all undergraduates are invited to Woburn Square. Here students are asked to participate within a context of presentation and curation. Basically an excuse for the undergraduates to show en mass. In 2007 I showed a number of works. Below are some examples.

The inspiration for the undulating bathmat came from a hallucinatory experience. A feeling of loss of control, and nausea. The anodyne/kitsch sea shell design is very specific for the feeling I wanted to achieve. Undulating Bath mat video
